Garage Storage Ideas
Jul 16, 2024It’s easy for storage spaces like garages and basements to become the dumping ground for all the things we don’t know what to do with. But when those spaces are functional and organized, the rest of your house will run more smoothly too. Here are some top ideas to make the most of your storage space.
- Add vertical shelving, either with wall-mounted shelves or shelving units. Wall-mounted shelves allow you to go as high as you want, maximizing your storage. Use metal shelving that is sturdier for bulky storage items. Metal storage units are also a good solution so things can be stacked neatly on them.
- Use a track system for awkwardly shaped items. Some things just don’t fit on shelves, so a track system that has different hooks and attachments can hold or store just about anything. Think shovels, brooms, rakes, and more for these areas.
- Get things off the floor. Use hooks to get sports equipment or other items out of the way. Not only does it look tidier, it’s also easier to sweep the floor if these items aren’t sitting in a corner.
- Organize your tools by “kits.” If you have a lot of tools in the garage, separate them by type—plumbing in one tool box, electrical supplies in another, etc. Label each tool box so you can easily what you need and get down to the project at hand.
- Use opaque bins to hide unsightly items. You’re not the only one who sees inside your garage. Opaque bins are great for hiding the necessary-but-not-pretty items and making them look organized.
- Put labels on all your bins. This makes it easy for everyone to return the items where they are supposed to go.
- Create organization zones. This can be “lawn and garden,” “outdoor toys and activities,” or “tools.” Planning this out before you even buy shelving units or storage bins will help you make the most use of your space.
- Keep everyday items at a lower level and seasonal items higher. These should be easy to reach without a ladder.
- Hang bikes out of the way. There are several different type of track systems made specifically for bikes for either the wall or a pulley system for the ceiling.
