Design Ideas for the Hub of the Home
Jun 13, 2024Your kitchen is without a doubt the hardest working spot in your house. Whether you are renovating or simply looking for some inspiration to make yours more efficient, here are 10 creative ideas to help you plan your perfect space.
- Disguise your appliances. Painted front panels are a great way to combine form and function—plus, you’ll never have to worry about fingerprints smudging your stainless steel fridge again.
- Create additional storage through built-ins. Banquette seating can feature storage drawers to hold serving pieces or lesser-used smaller appliances that don’t have a home elsewhere in the kitchen.
- Extend your cabinetry up to the ceiling so there is no wasted space. For a creative twist, add a library ladder for easy access. Placing a rail around the side of the cabinetry creates a place the ladder can be stored when not in use.
- Optimize your lower cabinets by having them made extra deep if you don’t have upper cabinets. You can also install one strategic column with custom shelves for cookbooks, dinner plates, barware or artwork.
- Repurpose storage units. If you run out of cabinet space, bring in a dresser or armoire to house your plates, glasses and serve ware. A family heirloom may fit the bill here.
- Paint the inside of your cabinets to correspond with an accent piece in the room. This is a nice contrast and will make you smile every time you open one up.
- Use open shelving to add items that feature your personality. Try framed photos, candlesticks and art. You can also splurge on colorful retro appliances to really showcase your space.
- Accommodate your pets. Create a space for pet food and water in a low cabinet drawer so it can be tucked away when not in use. You can even use the extra space under your island to fit a custom pet bed.
- Add a chalkboard wall. Not only will your kids enjoy adding their own artistic touches, but it’s also a fun way to show off your weekend brunch menu. Add chalkboard paint to the back of your island or pick a small wall in the kitchen.
- Add interest to your ceiling. Paint it a fun color, add pretty wallpaper or even painted beaded board. This is especially fun for an all-white color palette and will draw the eye upward.
